The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the option to challenge particular rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
